The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on September 9, 1981 – in Atlanta, USA. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.17.20.

But actually what Kṛṣṇa himself spoke Bhagavad Gītā where you can take it’s non different from Kṛṣṇa. And it’s even Bhāgavatam which is spoken about Kṛṣṇa that is not different from Kṛṣṇa. That is a Nigam cultivative. It is the pure ripened fruit of the Vedas. That’s why we study the Bhagavad Gītā and Sina Bhagavad. These are the representatives of Kṛṣṇa. One is spoken by Kṛṣṇa. One is the sound representation of Kṛṣṇa. Shamaveda Desa Devhuti. Like this taste of water in the Samaritan. That means that everyone knows Shama Vega is very welcome. So in that respect, anything that is first class, that’s Kṛṣṇa. Does Kṛṣṇa’s Vibhuti or just a fraction of Kṛṣṇa’s full focus. Then Kṛṣṇa have to describe. What is the use of saying all these things? With a fraction of my energy I am just supporting all the universes. To cite Pearl Strong See.

So all those energies are just partial manifestations. But the Seema Bhāgavatam is considered to be actually the incarnation of Kṛṣṇa. Indeed, Bhāgavatam itself says Kṛṣṇa Swadao Bhagate, Dharamugana Devis Kṛṣṇa when he returned back to the spiritual sky with knowledge Gyano Vairagodi Gyanavarādhārmali with religiosity, renunciation. Then he left the people of Kali Yuga with no spiritual vision. How they can see in the darkness Nostradition they just bewildered. Then Purāṇa Arko. Then the Mohabrana Bhāgavata rose like the sun. To dissipate all that ignorance.

You should.

Delve deep into the Bhagavas that was put directly under the charge of our son. Mordaya Bhāgavatam was spoken by Sukhadeva Swami Sinara Sampradāya. That is put under the charts. You can study the Bhāgavatam from the Sampradāya. It is specific succession and protect your life. Yes, the Vedas are an incarnation of incarnations of our Kṛṣṇa. How is this? How is this stated to be?

How do we.

What context would you take that synonymous. As the Vedas are to be revealed by him through his incarnation yesterday and Pilate from that respect. The Vedas are seen to be a sound representation of Kṛṣṇa because they are giving us knowledge about this world and about what is beyond this world. About how to the absolute Truth. Truth. So ordinary knowledge, ordinary information is subject to argumentation. Whatever is in the Veda that is considered to be Karma that is irrevocable truth. So that is Kṛṣṇa’s life from his realm. There are so many Vedas. Each Veda require one have a proper instructor to teach. So there are different branches. Just like today, there’s no proper guru.

For these.

Four Vedas chanting those mantras. They used to be able to chant the mantra and they kill it. Give back your life. But this forbidden Khalil, they can’t chant those mantras properly. Now there’s no proper referee Brahmin guru who can teach those. That’s why the Khaliyug, the Jangya has been given Haridamas on Tirtan. And Vyazadeva wrote the Mahabharata to bring out Bhagavad Gītā. And he wrote the Seren Bhāgavatam he because these are the essential so gram Toraj, these are the king of these scriptures. And still the disciplic succession for these branches of Vedic knowledge are intact. So they can be understood for many of the other branches of the Vedas which are very specific in medicine, different areas, there is not very easy to find successions for those.

Also.

Those have different purposes. Just like the Vedic Ayurvedic, they used to be able to operate by mantra. They can take out your liver by mantra. They don’t have to cut the skin. But when they were doing that.

During.

The Muhammadan rule, the Mohammedan kings, they outlawed it because their own Unani doctors were feeling a pinch from the Ayurvedic. Just like the British had the thumbs cut off of the weavers, the Muslim, they stopped all these surgeons so that.

They had to go underground.

So now the art of Vedic surgery is gone. Only they know some of the medicines from the books that are there. Even then the direct succession is shaken because of the oppression of them. That’s why Vedic medicine today is not as complete as what it was in the past. So while there’s still Caitani Mahapa’s movement on this world, you should fully perfect yourself. Because later on it is hard to find some qualified person to instruct on all these esoteric matters.

Repeat after me. Topi Vishnu.

It’s Sam.

Once again. Smarik, Pundari. Kaksham. Savaya. Vyantara. Suchi. Śrī Vishnu. Śrī Vishnu. Śrī Vishnu. So this is a Yajna sacrifice. It is called initiation. Initiation ceremony. Two initiations. First initiation and second. First initiation is offered by the spiritual master to encourage a devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa to advance in spiritual life. The spiritual master at that ceremony connects the disciple with the Supreme Lord, Eternally thereafter. And the spiritual master and the disciple have an eternal relationship from that point on. The spiritual master is obligated not to accept anyone that he cannot liberate. And the disciple is obligated to follow the instructions of the spiritual master as his life and soul. His attitude is that of a menial servant.

With the guidance of the spiritual master, one develops their service attitude to perfection so that their faith increases in Kṛṣṇa to the point of actual love of God. In the beginning, a person is attracted to the sound vibration coming from the scriptures, the Bhagavad Gītā and the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. Being attracted by that sound vibration and accepting it as the truth, the person begins to associate it with like minded persons in the society of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, the international society for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. After associating with persons who are also on the spiritual path, that person begins to do as they do. And when that person comes to the realization that the most important thing in their life is to accept a bona fide guru in the line of discipline succession coming from the original guru, Śrī Kṛṣṇa himself, then that person takes up chanting very seriously.

And after at least six months period of following the regulative principles, no illicit sex life, no intoxication, no gambling, no eating of meat, fish or eggs, no coffee, tea or cigarettes. After doing that enchanting 16 rounds a day for six months at least, to demonstrate their faith, that person is eligible to approach the spiritual master and be accepted as a bona fide disciple. Then, after some time, say one year of continuously carrying out the orders of the spiritual master rewards the disciple for his firm faith and determination and offers him further spiritual advancement whereby he can come closer to the Lord. That second initiation is called Brāhmaṇa initiation, Brahminical initiation. That initiation allows a disciple to cook, to worship the deities personally, become personal servants of the Lord. It increases the strength, the spiritual strength of the disciple for preaching.

The spiritual master expects the disciple at that point to be very diligent, very strict in following his vow. And he expects the disciple to assist him in serving his spiritual master. And the purpose of all this service? The disciple serving his spiritual master serving his spiritual master is to spread Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, the great gift, this matchless gift to the human civilization of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. Tad biddhi Pranipartena pari passnena Sevya Upadeg Shanti te Gyanam Gyananas Tatvadarshana this verse is from the fourth chapter of the Bhagavad Gītā 34th verse Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth. The path of spiritual realization is undoubtedly difficult.

The Lord therefore advises us to approach a bona fide spiritual master in the line of disciplic succession from the Lord Himself. No one can be a bona fide spiritual master without following the principle of disciplic succession. The Lord is the original spiritual master. And a person in the siptic succession can convey the message of the Lord as it is to his disciple. So as it is, it’s very important that we get the spiritual message from Lord Kṛṣṇa who spoke 5,000 years ago of this Bhagavad Gītā. But in the course of time, the Bhagavad Gītā had become covered by political, economic motives until or of course, during that period of time, the line of disciplic succession Spiritual masters preserved the truth and passed it on to one another in their discipline succession.

But the disciples were not many because of interference from economic development, artificial standards of living, the development of the age of industry and the loss of simple life and high thinking. Because of this, the thin line of vaiavas in the past 5,000 years did not expand very much until by the plan of the founder crya of our movement, his Divine grace AC Bhaktavaramta Swami Prabhupda, in the plan of his spiritual master, Rla Baba came to the United States in 1965 and began to spread Kṛṣṇa Consciousness like anything and from the United States. Since that time, over 140 different centers and farm projects have been established around the world, including India. And then Śrīla Bambat appointed Eleven’s successor spiritual masters to continue the succession in 1977.

When he disappeared from this mortal world, he expected his disciples to carry on his teachings and to increase the movement by taking disciples themselves. But their qualification is that they took the message from the spiritual master as it is and have not changed one syllable. It’s like the mailman. The mailman’s business is to deliver the mail untampered with as it is. Even the mailman may be seen to have some fault. His perfection lies in delivering the message as it is. So everyone in the international society for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness must learn the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness and out of compassion and concern and duty, out of compassion and concern to the people in general, and have duty to the spiritual master. Bring forth this secret, this spiritual secret that has lain hidden for so Many thousands of years. In Māyāpur, 1975.

Śrīla Baba charged his American disciples with a special task. He said that even though around the world there may be times and places. When there is not conducive for speaking Kṛṣṇa Conscious messages. That in America the field is always good. And he charged his American disciples With taking the message around the world. In fact, it was already going on. Devotees from America had spread this movement. To practically every country on this planet. So we must. This is the heart. This is the heart of our movement. And we must keep that heart very pure. And we must work very hard to bring more of our countrymen. To the platform of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. Which is above patriotism, which is above social work. And yet includes them, without which they have no meaning. What good is a country without a God? What good is it?

National leadership without connection with a universal government. Is as good as a hand separated from the arm. A hand and name only. And only havoc can be expected from such disconnected leadership. Who rapidly become simply a gang of thieves and tax officers. So our mission is to purify ourselves. To purify our friends and associates. By passing on this message. Informing them there’s no need for them to change their position in this world. Simply to remain continue their activity. But change their consciousness. To become conscious of God. The actual goal, the purpose, the real purpose of this human form of life. So it is a great obligation that we have. That must first be understood by the new disciple. Their obligation to their spiritual master can never be paid. But an attempt can be made. Just like if someone saves your life.

If someone saves you from drowning, how can you repay? What can you say? How can you express your appreciation? And that’s a material example. What to speak of being saved by someone from drowning. In the material ocean of ignorance. How can we repay? What can we say? Somehow or another, we have to act. We have to be very active in spreading that gift of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. That is the only way that we can attempt to repay that eternal obligation. For those who are receiving second initiation, that obligation intensifies. And the urgency to fulfill it increases daily. And they’re thinking every day. At least three times a day, they pray. Let meditate upon my spiritual master. Let me try to understand him who is always in blissful Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. Let meditate upon him being enthused as he has enthused us.

So then in the second initiation. The relationship with the spiritual master becomes more intense and more sublime. As the disciple is always thinking how to enthuse the spiritual master. But this is simply an intensity of the original obligation to the spiritual master to that is the sum and substance of the duty of the disciple, be that disciple a first initiate or a second initiate. And it is also the duty of the friends and well wishers of this movement according to their ability and to their capacity and their understanding to help us push on this movement. It is the only movement in this world that is showing the spiritual strength to counteract atheistic principles as they are evident in both liberal atheism, liberal atheistic government and communistic government, which is also simply atheism.

There is no movement, political, social or economic, that shows any promise of defeating these forces on their own terms. It must be done from the transcendental platform by spiritual strength. And that spiritual strength begins to grow at initiation, just like a child is born. You do not expect a child immediately upon birth to get up and walk and to carry heavy weights and to use the intellect to do mathematical problems. But nor can you expect immediately upon being initiated to show full spiritual strength. But that initiation is like being born again, twice born, we call it to be twice born, actually born again. And then gradually one begins to feel the development of one’s spiritual strength and knowledge. Gradually, year after year, they become stronger and more convinced and more convincing until they become fully armed by the grace of their spiritual master.

So we are training, everyone is training and no one is perfect. We’re all training. Even the spiritual master is trying to please a spiritual master, always increasing. Everyone is increasing. Our book distribution, our preaching, our studies, our purification, our conviction, our determination, our enthusiasm, all these things are increasing. They should never slacken. Just like if you have a child, if you stop feeding the child will be getting bone disease, rickets. You don’t feed properly. If you don’t take care of the child will not grow. If the child does not get milk, the bones will not grow, the brain will not develop without protection, without care, without proper food. So similarly, we are all like spiritual babies and we must feed ourselves and feed one another and gradually grow and grow in spiritual strength. Bala, that is the gold.

So my dear Godbrother, his divine grace should have redone on the mirage. Acharya Dave, he asked me to chant on some beads. And he asked me also if I’d like to share a little karma. But I said no, I am not prepared to do so, but I will chant on the beads. Actually, by Ka’s grace, the past karma of a sincere devotee is minimized practically till new to new by his Practice and sincerity. But still the spiritual master must be willing to absorb something. And afterwards, after the initiation, anything that the disciple does to break his vows, that reaction goes immediately to the spiritual master. So we do not want to cause any trouble to the spiritual master. We want to keep our word. And how do we keep our word? By always being enthusiastic. Enthusiasm is the energy of the soul.

As the consciousness is the current of the soul, so enthusiasm is an energy of the spirit soul. It is the barometer of how much the spirit soul is giving of itself. The spirit soul has no limit to its energy. It is eternal. Its energy is unbounded. It is not like the limitations of this material body. Which has its appearance, grows a bit, has a few byproducts, remains for some time, begins to dwindle, and then disappears from the face of this earth. The spirit soul is not like that. He is energizing this body for some time. According to his own karma. He can have this body for such a while, not very long. So there’s no time to waste. So we have to give our spiritual energy. People have. Everyone is enthusiastic. Everyone. But misguided persons are enthusiastic.

For the wrong causes and for the wrong reasons. Everyone must be enthusiastic, especially in the face of so many material adversities. In our modern civilization, practically, one has to be enthusiastic simply to survive. Simply to maintain a family is a great credit. Just to have a wife and child. To maintain a wife and child is a great credit. To be enthusiastic over in the material world. So everyone is enthusiastic. But one who becomes a little spiritually awakened places the enthusiasm in a different place, puts it in a different place. Everyone has to have faith to get up in the morning and to go to take bath, to eat. One has to have faith that the day will go on. Everyone’s putting their faith in material causes and material ends and material purposes. But the spiritually awakened person is putting their faith in God.

And that faith increases by the mercy of the spiritual master. Increases. Until the platform of knowledge and self realization. Until one actually is able to be conscious of God and surrender to God and love God. That we love so many things. We love this body, we love our wives, we love our children, we love our friends, we love our country. We love so many things, but we don’t love God. We’re conscious of our wives, we’re conscious of our children. We’re conscious of our friends. We’re conscious of our teachers. We’re conscious of our cars. We’re conscious of our clothes. We’re conscious of this. We’re conscious of that. We’re conscious of our country. We’re conscious of impending economic problems, war. We’re conscious of so many abstract things, but we’re not.

(Side B of the Cassette)

Genesis. Just come here. Better come here. You can come here, mother. Genesis. What are the four regular principles?

No.

What is the other one? No gambling. Chant at least 16 rounds a day. Your name is Jata Viraga. Jata Viraga. One who is a surrendered soul has renounced. Renounced the material conception of life. Can you offer your obeisances please to your spiritual master? Mother Debbie. Before I get the principles. Your name is Di. Shelter of the Lord. Every devotee who is sincere in advancing Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. Everyone is a temple. Everybody is a temple. And one who is advancing in Kṛṣṇa Consciousness purifies the heart. As a shelter for the Lord. As a seat of the Lord. And the Lord is happy to reside there within the heart. Of course, he’s in everyone’s heart. But the devotee makes advancement and cleanses the heart as a very nice place for the Lord to reside.

And then in due time he gives instructions from within of how to advance in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Dr. Tony. Fluoric principles.

No meat eating, fish or eggs. No illicit sex. No gambling. No intoxication. Chant at least 16 rounds every day.

Your name is Singhabala. Lion’s strength. You go back and pay your obeisances. So one has to prosecute Kṛṣṇa Consciousness with the strength of the line. Śrīla Baba was often compared to a lion. His preaching was so strong. Bala means spiritual strength, not material strength. Bala, the strength of Balaram N Singh means like a lion. So back to Sam. The four activities.

No meeting. No illicit sex. No gambling. No intoxication.

Yes.

Chant me 16 rounds a day.

Yes, at least 16 rounds. Wait a minute now. Dr. Tony. The names have been reversed here. But they’re. But they’re both. Both very nice. Meaning Same thing, Tony. Your name is Tivra. Bhakti. Tiva means strength also. Just like Bhakti. Bhakti. Yoga in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam explained Tivrana Bhakti yogina with the strength of the sun ray. The sun is so powerful that it can purify uncontaminated place. So Bhakti. Bhakti means devotion. So Bhaktatoni means. Now team for Bhakti. The unconditional strength of Bhakti. And then Bhakti Sam Simhaba Simha ba Lion strength. So we have two strong men now. The second initiates. They have their sacred threads. And the procedure is after the fire ceremony. They have come to my rooms and I will give them the Gayatri mantra. They will listen to the sound of their spiritual master in the right ear. They will hear the vibration.

And he will explain the Gayatri Mantra. And he will vibrate it for them. And they will receive their sacred threads. And further instructions on chanting Gayatri. Now we will begin our fire ceremony chant.
